Sankofa Community Farm Volunteer Day

Sankofa Community Farm at Bartram’s Garden

5400 Lindbergh Blvd.

Philadelphia, PA 19143

Volunteers will work alongside Farm staff to support seasonal plantings, harvesting, weeding, invasive species removal, and orchard support. Volunteers will meet at the Sankofa Community Farm at 9:30 AM and be separated into groups and provided with instructions and safety protocols for the day.

77th Annual Garden Symposium at Colonial Williamsburg

Theme: "Roots of the American Garden!" The 2024 symposium presentations and speakers will explore diverse topics and perspectives to understand how historical gardening methods can challenge and inspire. The event will focus on edible gardening and landscape architecture and design. A sample of presenters - Joanne Chapman, Colonial Williamsburg Director of Landscape; Teri Speight, former City of Fredericksburg Head Gardener; William Woys Weaver, food historian, seed saver, and founder of the Roughwood Table.

44th Annual Seed Savers Exchange Conference

For the 44th annual conference, Seed Savers Exchange divided sessions into four days with themes on community, foodways, breeding, and climate. Participants will hear from subject matter experts including SSE staff and community builders, and enjoy interactive small group breakout rooms.

Whether you are a first-time gardener, first-time seed saver, or someone who has been to every one of our previous 43 summer conferences, we know attendees will be inspired by this year's theme, "Growing Together: Sharing Seeds, Stories, and Skills."

Slavery in the New Netherland & Dutch Atlantic World - Day 1

Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture, 515 Malcolm X Boulevard, New York, NY. 10037

Slavery in New Netherland and the Dutch Atlantic World, a two-day conference in New York City presented in partnership with the New Netherland Institute, will help extend the call for increased historical research on slavery in the United States. Held at the New-York Historical Society on the Upper West Side and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem, it will convene academic scholars, researchers, public historians, archivists, and librarians from the Netherlands and the United States. Together, they will weigh the history and legacy of slavery, the slave trade, and colonialism in New Netherland, the Netherlands, and the Americas.

The Odunde festival, whose concept originates from the Yoruba people of Nigeria, West Africa, celebrates the coming of another year for  African-Americans and African people around the world.
